Born from the Volcano’s Wish

Few islands have excited the imagination of people as much as Santorini, the ancient island of Thera, whose identity was mythologized after a massive volcanic eruption, around 1600 BC, one of the biggest in history. This event formed the crescent-shaped caldera, as we admire it today. Its current appellation Santorini was born many centuries later when the Crusaders came forth with the impossible beauty of the island and named it after a chapel dedicated to Saint Irene.
